The new work of the legendary Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Shutter Island) can be safely called the main movie novelty of the week. The film Killers of the Flower Moon is based on the 2017 documentary book of the same name by journalist David Grann and tells the story of an FBI investigation in the 20s of the 20th century in the Osage Indian settlement in Oklahoma. Shortly before the main events of the movie, an oil field was discovered there, which enriched the locals, but very soon they began to die. The FBI sent undercover agents to solve the murders.

The film stars Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, who have worked with Scorsese many times, including in his most high-profile films. Thus, the former starred in such hits as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino and The Irishman, and the latter in Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Isle of Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street.

In addition, the film stars Jesse Plemens (The Power of the Dog, The Irishman, Love and Death), Brendan Fraser (The Whale, The Mummy) and Lily Gladstone.

Killers of the Flower Moon premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 20, 2023, where it received rave reviews from critics. Currently, the film has a score of 8.4 out of 10 on IMDb, and on Rotten Tomatoes it has 93% approval from critics with a “Certified Fresh” rating. Meanwhile, on Metacritic, it received 89 points out of 100 with a “must see” rating from film reviewers, which corresponds to the characteristic of “universal acclaim,” and 7.3 points out of 10 from the general audience (“generally positive reviews”).

UK, France, 2023, Comedy/Drama

The Great Escaper is worth watching if only because it is officially the last role of the legendary British actor Michael Caine (most of Christopher Nolan’s films, the Now You See Me dilogy, Boyhood, The Cider House Rules, Alfie). The 90-year-old two-time Oscar winner has officially announced that he will retire after playing the lead role in this film. Kane admits that due to his advanced age, it is becoming difficult for him to get leading roles, and the range of roles that can be offered to him is too narrow, so he decided to end his career on a major note.

The film is based on the true story of 89-year-old British World War II veteran Bernard Jordan, who secretly leaves his retirement home to attend the anniversary of the D-Day landings in France. But he can’t escape quietly: the man’s disappearance causes a real stir in his hometown, and he makes headlines, attracting the attention of the whole world.

The film stars the legendary British actress and politician Glenda Jackson, a two-time Oscar winner for her roles in Women in Love and A Touch of Class. This is her last role – in the summer of 2023, the actress died at the age of 87.

The Great Escaper was directed by Oliver Parker, who has worked on such films as Othello, An Ideal Husband, The Importance of Being Earnest, St. Trinian’s, and Dorian Gray.

The film had its world premiere in late September 2023 and received mostly positive reviews. For example, it has a score of 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb, and 79% approval from critics and 96% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
